Hello, dear friends!
In this week’s poem, I try to turn the camera. Reverse the lens to a different point of view.
We have all read a thousand great poems about butterflies… but what about the butterfly’s shadow? Don’t they count?
And what about the faeries? Not always our friends and often quite mischievous, even dangerous.
Then there is the headier stuff – transformation, birth, death, beauty – all folded into (what I hope) proves to be a playfully dark read for all of you.
Please let me know your thoughts and feelings in the Comments Section below. Enjoy!

evaporate
spent so much time in this cocoon
perfecting perfect in every way
hidden amongst the ribbons fair
hung like prayers
on this seaside hawthorn tree
seems i may’ve outstayed my welcome
for the treebound fae had their way with me
tampered with my vain transcendence
divvied my cells
with pixie spells in two
spring forth, emerge, to the beach below
i flitter and flit along the pebbles
a beautiful butterfly glides above
and i stare back…
its echoed black shadow
stare back in awe of my new face
the grace with which we deftly navigate
currents of air under the sun
until a cloud blots out the light and i
evaporate
Great piece! I love the imagery and the metaphor of the shadow. The idea of it evaporating with the movement of the clouds to block the sun. And hearing the thoughts of the butterfly personified…just great piece with powerful theme!
Thanks so much, PS! Yeah I got a little existential in this one… good too hear that came through. Cheers. 🙏🏻🌹🍷✨🦋
Absolutely love this. Thanks for sharing. It resonates beautifully.
Thank you so much, Trish! 🦋🌹💙🍷🙏🏻
I’m sure that a lot of people have grown up feeling like the shadow of a more successful or attractive sibling. When you leave home (the cocoon) it’s almost like a rebirth, when you finally reveal your own true self.
Love this interpretation, Naomi. Cheers! 🦋🙏🏻🍷🌹✨
